Getting ready for Flatstock at Pitchfork Music Featival in Chicago July 13th-15th, and I have TSA to thank for this.  They must have thought my inks looked suspect, after all, who would carry inks cross country in their luggage (A: an artist you mean jerks!)  The yellow was mostly contained to the top layer of luggage.  Here we have it!  The print down begins!  More updates to follow…pics, tshirts, and the like : )  Happy summer yo.

Discovered: Fleischer’s Superman Model Was Karol Krauser

Animation historians can sleep a little easier tonight. We now know that the rotoscope model for Superman in the classic Fleischer Studios shorts was a gentleman by the name of Karol Krauser. According to the Superman Homepage, Krauser was “best known as one of the Kalmikoff Brothers, Mad Russians, in the wrestling world of the […]

Featured as Staff Pick on Kickstarter!

“Quick and Dirty” is an animated exquisite corpse project created by 24 artists and 6 sound artists.

Curated by artists Maya Erdelyi and Gina Kelly, “Quick and Dirty” refers to the idea of working fast and not over-thinking what you are creating—letting the unconscious take over and make decisions. Each artist had a week to create at least 24 frames of animation, some contributed as much as 100 frames. The only information that they receive is the last frame of the previous artist’s sequence.

Kelly began the project on July 1, 2011 and continued with each artist until last frames were completed towards the beginning of 2012. In March 2012, sound artists take over and add sound and music to the animation using a separate exquisite corpes technique. The final piece will be an animated exquisite corpse film.

The artists involved include established and emerging talents in the field (listed below). We will publish a small book and DVD, and have a group show in LA and other cities showcasing the frames and screen the animation (locations and dates still TBA).

The 24 artists involved are:
Gina Kelly, Meejin Hong, Matt Broach, Nate Page and Jena Lee, Jim Trainor,Kathleen Judge, Maya Erdelyi, Courtney Ziegler, Ethan Clarke, Sara Gunnarsdóttir, Jeanette Bonds, Lori Damiano, Olivia Taussig, Devin Flynn, Nick Gibney, Guy Burwell, Masha Vasilkovsky, Dan Grzeca, Tunde Adebimpe, Aimee Gogun, Manuel Barenboim, Maureen Selwood.  The film is composited by Benjamin Rohel.

Sound and Music
Curated by Paul Fraser

In addition to the animation, the exquisite corpse method will be used for the sound elements of the film, though the method is much different. Each animator passes on their last frame to the next animator, but for the sound, the method of dividing up 2 minutes of the film linearly among the sound artists doesn’t translate as well.

Sound designing and scoring a film is a layered process, not a linear one.  So, for this project, each of the 6 sound artists will create 2 tracks of the entire sound mix for the length of the 2-minute film. This allows each sound designer or composer to see the visual portion of the film in its entirety in order create unity between the visuals and the audio, while still creating an exquisite corpse among the different sound artists.

So, for this exquisite corpse, each sound artist will receive 1 track from the last sound artist as a reference track.  When the sound artist is finished with their 2 tracks, they pass on 1 of their tracks to the next person, and so on.

Collaborating Sound Artists:

  • Kari Seekins (sound design)
  • Jim Becker (composition)
  • Jay Bodley (composition)
  • Ellen Reid (composition)
  • Justin Asher (sound design and composition)
  • Paul Fraser (sound design and composition)
