Finally got news that I have osteo-arthritis in my hips.  Yes, that sucks, and I have been hurting for what seems to be ages now, but at least it clears some things up.  #1: no more printing my own work, as its too damaging on my hips (learned this on my recent piece for Fol Chen…perhaps my unexpected last poster!) #2: painting and animated pieces are now my forte.  To help this along, I spent the day tearing apart the walk-in closet of the guest bedroom to make a shooting space.  Now that I know the problem, I can get onto finding solutions!  Here’s to small black rooms!

Digging through the secret stash of posters, I stumbled upon an Artist Proof of this Built to Spill series.  Previously sold out!  This was for BTS touring for “Perfect from Now On”, an album that blew everyone away upon its release.  I was honored to do this poster, and happily got a couple signed…one for the friend who introduced me to Built to Spill so many years ago, and one for my little brother, who still loves them as much as I do.  The seraphim on this poster is considered to be the ‘highest order of angel’…”I’m gonna be perfect from now on, I’m gonna be perfect….starting now….”.  $65 shipping included to continental US.  Contact me if its yours!

The End of the World….
When I was asked to participate in a show about the end of the world, initially I thought this was a fun thing to do.  The gallery was good, the artist list for the show full of respectable artists that I know and like.  ”Sounds great!” I thought to myself.  Then, when working on multiple ideas in the studio I was stumped by the endless array of the cheesiest most ridiculous scenarios that inevitably come to mind when we think of the end of the world.  Finally, I came around to decide that this was an idea that was mostly thriving due to its value as entertainment, even if that value was also based on the potential threat we feel personally, or how much we’d love to see the opposite political side be set straight…its still entertaining to us.  Its entertaining to think of all the things that could happen because of an end of the world event…even if that event actually turned out to be biblical in some way.
I put all the ideas down and drew this out.  It seems like the best way for me to put all that into an image is up there, in the Hollywood sign, à flambé.  The essence of the image is sort of a film noir kind of reality…where something really bad is happening, but somehow, it still looks so good.  I mean, its at least 75 degrees in that image…you’d need sunglasses to see it in person : )
I’m calling it La Fin Du Monde en Noir.  Pull out your shades and be entertained.

On Health Care - My Experience

I left my job to return to school in 2008. For two months I had no health care, and in that time my appendix burst. I went to Memorial White Hospital, was seen in two hours, and was told when I was admitted that under law, they had to inform me that my cash bill for such a service would be in the range of $50,000. I cried hard when I learned this, and tried to leave to go to General Hospital where there were programs to help with the cost. A smart Doctor stopped me from leaving, saying that if I left the hospital to wait in line at General Hospital, I was risked dying before being seen, literally. They stopped me from leaving because my appendix had already begun to decompose my colon from septic shock. Janice Gomez and Fatima Hoang were there in this moment…they both held me while I cried and tried to get me to be logical and forget about the debt in favor of getting admitted for emergency surgery.

This operation is a common operation, and costs only 10% of the $35,000 I was actually charged. Including the surgeon’s fee, this surgery costs $3500. Why is there such a huge mark up? Because so many people are denied health care coverage, that when they do need health care, the mark up is that high in an attempt to cover the costs of all treatments and surgeries that are denied by insurance. This means the mark up is applied to everything, material or service, in the health care industry, for everyone, covered by insurance or not.

When you think about health care, keep in mind that you already pay for everyone’s health care in your premiums, that the mark up is unreal and unfair, and that people do die everyday in needless circumstances. We are the world’s leader in healthcare technology, but not in getting those services to our people.

I’m happy to be alive, and grateful to White Memorial Hospital for not allowing me to leave, as well as an in-kind organization that raises money to help people in my situation. However, not everyone has this kind of luck.

When you vote on health care, think of me guys. I’m not lazy, I don’t expect that you should pay for me, I just expect that we should all have the same access to basic and necessary services. Its the system that’s broken, not the people who use it. #obama2012
